Our partner is an international organization delivering large-scale digital solutions for EU institutions. We are looking for an experienced Software Subject Matter Expert to join a long-term international project (24 months total duration) supporting the design, implementation, and maintenance of complex information systems used at EU level. This role focuses on translating business requirements into optimal technical solutions, maintaining system documentation, and providing expert-level guidance on software architecture and EU cybersecurity frameworks.

Brief position description
As a Software Subject Matter Expert, you will be responsible for gathering and analyzing business needs, designing and implementing technical solutions, and maintaining comprehensive system documentation across the software development lifecycle. You will serve as a technical authority, translating complex business requirements into optimal technical designs while ensuring compliance with EU regulatory acts and cybersecurity standards. You will work closely with stakeholders across technical and business domains, providing expert guidance on system architecture, interoperability, and security best practices in support of EU-level digital infrastructure.

Software Subject Matter Expert – Key Responsibilities
- Gathering, analyzing, and assessing business needs related to complex software systems
- Translating business requirements and needs into optimal technical designs and solutions
- Implementing technical solutions in the area of expertise
- Proposing and implementing improvements related to system architecture and functionality
- Maintaining up-to-date solution documentation including technical documentation, Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), user manuals, and knowledge base articles
- Managing solutions through the complete service/software development lifecycle where applicable
- Ensuring compliance with EU regulatory acts and cybersecurity frameworks
- Providing expert guidance on system interoperability and IT security standards
- Supporting troubleshooting, analytical problem-solving, and optimization initiatives
- Other specific duties as assigned by the team leader
Software Subject Matter Expert – Main requirements
- Minimum 10 years of experience relevant to the job
- ICT-relevant degree is NOT mandatory
- Excellent knowledge of software systems at the design/architecture/implementation level
- Good understanding of complex information systems and their interoperability
- Knowledge of IT security standards and best practices, of EU Regulatory acts and the EU cybersecurity framework
- Knowledge of EU initiatives related to security and border management (e.g. Copernicus, Galileo, etc.)
- Familiarity with project management approaches, tools, and phases of the project lifecycle and software development lifecycle
- English level: B2 confirmed by a certificate or be willing to take the exam
- Very strong sense of responsibility, with accuracy, attention to detail and a high level of motivation and initiative
- Open-minded, excellent troubleshooting, analytical, and problem-solving skills
- Very good organizational and communication skills, with high
- Supportive and helpful personality with cooperative and service-oriented attitude
- Ability to work in a stressful environment with minimal supervision and forward-looking with a holistic approach
