Senior Data Engineer | Data Infrastructure Startup

We are partnered with a fast-growing, fully remote product startup building infrastructure that powers data-driven innovation at global scale. The company operates a global residential proxy network, develops AI-powered automation tools, and maintains a monetization SDK powering millions of active users worldwide across desktop, mobile, and smart TV platforms. We are looking for a Senior Data Engineer to take full ownership of the client’s core data pipelines. In this role, you will design, scale, and operate the streaming and storage systems carrying over 5 TB/day of telemetry and event data from across the business – proxy traffic, SDK signals, and platform operations—where correctness under replay, late-arriving data, and massive throughput are the core challenges.

Senior Data Engineer – Key Responsibilities

• End-to-End Pipeline Ownership: Design, deploy, and operate high-volume streaming data pipelines from initial design through production execution.
• Storage Layer Optimization: Architect event storage, partitioning, retention, and expiration strategies to optimize query speed against strict infrastructure cost constraints.
• Failure-Tolerant Ingestion: Guarantee system correctness under edge conditions, handling event replays, deduplication, out-of-order data, and late-arriving windows.
• Metric & Aggregation Modeling: Own the metrics, data models, and freshness guarantees powering internal reporting and customer-facing usage views.
• Data Observability & Automation: Automate schema migrations, backfills, and reconciliation jobs in code. Instrument alerting for stream lag, freshness, and ingest errors.
• Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work directly with proxy infrastructure, backend, and product teams to ensure emitted event streams directly align with business requirements.

Senior Data Engineer – Main requirements

• 7+ years building and operating production data pipelines.
• Strong PostgreSQL: partitioning, indexing, bulk-insert performance, and a clear view of where it stops being the right tool. Production experience with >5B database.
• Hands-on ClickHouse experience: engine selection, partitioning, materialized views, and query tuning across billions of rows.
• Deep SQL and analytical data modeling – turning raw events into aggregates other people can trust without asking you first.
• Experience with high-volume telemetry or observability data (multi-TB/day ingest).
• Demonstrated ownership – you’ve been the person accountable for different data pipelines managing critical business data.
• Active user of agentic coding tools.
• Strong communication skills – you write clearly, escalate early, and make your reasoning visible in an async team.
• Self-directed and comfortable in a fast-paced startup environment where the scope is yours to define.
• Experience with planning, scaling and balancing requirements including budget, team skillsets.

Bonus Points

• Kafka, or a comparable streaming platform, run in production – partitioning, consumer groups, and delivery guarantees.
• Go – our pipeline services are written in it, and you’d be writing and debugging them.
• Experience with usage-based metering or billing pipelines, including reconciliation and late-data handling.
• Workflow orchestration for backfills and scheduled jobs (Temporal, Airflow, Dagster).
• BI and transformation tooling – Metabase, Grafana, dbt or equivalent.
• AWS experience (RDS, Lambda, SQS, S3/Parquet, EC2) and Terraform.
• Experience self-hosting and operating ClickHouse or Kafka clusters rather than consuming them as a service.
